Plone Software Development and Hosting

Vercadia provides content management solutions based on the Plone open source content management system.

Plone is a standards-compliant, free, and open source content management system. Plone is an ideal content management system for the web:

    • Plone is open source. The Plone Foundation, sponsored by both non-profit and commercial interests, is dedicated to the the preservation of Plone as an open source solution. Source code is readily available from the Plone community.
    • Plone is cross platform. Plone server components can be deployed to a number of different Unix and Linux variants, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. The Plone community have developed installers that make Plone server components easy to set up, hardware requirements are modest and dependencies are minimal. Plone supports multiple client platforms and web browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari, and does not require distribution of Java applets or ActiveX components to user workstations.
    • Plone software is free. There is no charge to download, install and operate Plone. Support is freely available from the community via electronic knowledge bases, discussion forums, mailing lists and live chat groups. Costs are isolated to allocation of hosting services, procurement of hardware and operating system software (if necessary) and custom software development. Free, open source tools such as Eclipse, PyDev and ArgoUML can be used to model, develop and debug Plone source code.
    • Plone has a scalable and secure architecture. Plone can be front ended by web servers such as Apache and IIS, load balanced in scenarios where large numbers of concurrent users are expected, optimized using generic web caching servers like Squid, and deployed using SSL encryption if desired.
    • Plone has a robust feature set. A number of features useful for community web sites are already available in the framework, including versioning, discussion forums, newsfeeds, calendars, full-text search, user profiles, and internationalization.
    • Plone is web-friendly and accessible. Plone produces standard XHTML and CSS and meets accessibility guidelines defined by the W3C.
    • Plone can be hosted. Service providers who specialize in running Plone can be used to outsource storage and bandwidth requirements and minimize upfront costs.
    • Plone has a strong community. Software releases are regular and of high quality, and the roadmap for future releases is communicated openly and freely. Thousands of installations of Plone exist, running on industrial strength servers in secure data centers to consultant laptops. Conferences, symposiums and development sprints - gatherings of Plone developers to code features - are held all over the world.
    • Plone is global. Oxfam America and the Oxford Health Alliance (based in the UK) use Plone for their external site. The Electrical and Computer Engineering School at Rice University uses Plone to communicate with prospective students.
